Eve Ransom edition by George Gissing Reference eBooks

I think this might be Gissing's best book. Although it was written over 100 years ago, the themes here are very relevant today. Being shorter than most of his books, it might be a good starting place for someone interested in the author. There aren't a lot of odd Victorian customs that get in the way of the story.

It is quite simply a story of unrequited love, the situation of women in Victorian society, poverty, and the choices a thinking person was forced to make. Often they weren't happy ones. Poverty, and what it does to a person, is an ongoing theme in Gissing's novels. He sees nothing uplifting in it, as Dickens does. Poverty corrupts even those who might try to be honorable and that's all there is to it.

The book centers around the choice a smart-but-poor woman must make regarding marriage. A discussion group would have a good time debating whether Eve is a skank who strings poor Hillard along, or a person forced to do what she has to do to get by in a society where she can't comfortably provide for herself through a job.

The dialogue and situations are so realisitc, it makes one think that poor old Gissing went through this kind of thing. Quite sad that this was his last novel, and he spent his last weeks pouring over these ideas.
